The City Texans are thrilled to announce that together we raised $7,711.42 in 2011 to be donated to Susan G. Komen, NENY. This year’s City Wide Line dance was a great success. The Yankee Doodle Band kicked off the festivities, followed by Patsy Cline impersonator Courtney Van Dyke, and then closing with the Hilltop Rambles. Of course, we had sponsor WGNA’s own Kevin Richards keeping everybody on their feet and in line. There were several vendors including Greek and European foods, crafts, jewelry, makeup, raffles, and much more for the whole family. We were even blessed with a beautiful day!
Our survivor honorees for the day were Tammy Hilstro Kishbaugh and Joann Oxbrough McCabe.
Tammy discovered a lump on her left breast mid December 2006. After seeing the surgeon she was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer. Chemotherapy started March 8, 2007 and continued until the end of June. During chemo Tammy had developed asthma, bleeding ulcers, and a stomach infection. After conquering all of this, the doctors discovered a suspicious ovarian cyst which lead to a complete hysterectomy in May of 2008. In October 2008 Tammy was told she was now in remission. October 2011 marks her 3 year anniversary in remission!
In 1986 at the age of 31, Joann went to have a cyst removed, she was then diagnosed with Breast Cancer. After surgery and radiation treatments Joann stayed NED (No Evidence of Disease), for 19 years. In February 2005 she noticed redness that was warm to the touch on her breast. As most people would she went to her Dermatologist for treatment. Joann was then diagnosed with IBC, (Inflammatory Breast Cancer), the most aggressive form of Breast Cancer. A few years later the cancer spread to her other breast, lymph nodes, and spine, making her cancer Stage 4. Joann has been undergoing chemo treatments for 6.5 years now and says she is still learning to live with cancer.
We toast these women for the strength, courage, hope and faith. Many more Happy Birthdays to both!
